Voted onto DownBeat Magazine's 'Best of 2016' List

Dear Listener,
I entitled this recording Sanctuary from the Ordinary because that is what Firehouse 12 owner and curator Nick Lloyd has created – an environment where artists can be true to themselves without the pressure of being commercially accepted. It’s the best of both worlds – a state-of-the-art recording studio with an enthusiastic audience. And – without drinks spilling, silverware clanging, or cash registers ringing! Recording live (my first) is both an exciting and scary endeavor. We had one night and one take per tune, but there is no substitute for playing in front of people that gave back as much as we gave them. I believe it our best effort to date.
Continuing my fascination with combining Latin rhythms with Modern Jazz harmony, I have used Cuban Bata Drum rhythms to provide an undercurrent on three pieces. Green Chimneys, as an Ogun -- the only arrangement on this session – allowed me to take Monk’s brilliantly simplistic melody and harmony to a new place. A Lalubanche was applied to Calling and an Ochosi to Song in Search of a Ringtone. The title is a 21st Century word-play on Eddie Harris’ Theme in Search of a Movie. (I didn’t see anyone texting during our performance, by the way…)
Stravinsky’s Mambo combines one of Serial composer Igor Stravinsky’s 12-tone rows with a mambo. Somehow, I was able to find a melody in there!
I wrote the title track as a mambo in 5/4 time, but it eventually gravitated to a more Modern Jazz groove. My drummer, Brian, calls it my latest ‘hit’.
The harmony to Memorial Day, written on said day, was based on the haunting theme from Netflix’s original series House of Cards. The rhythm is in 5/8, but instead of writing the common grouping of 3+2, I decided on the more challenging 2+3.
After dancing Tango for a week with my wife, Luz, during our honeymoon in Buenos Aires, I decided to write Take 2 -
Slightly Off and Ballad for One are more on the ‘straight ahead jazz’ side, with the former an up-tempo, angular version based on the chord changes of Wayne Shorter’s Wild Flower.
