about

Dear Listener,
This is my 5th recording in a 10-year time span as a leader. With the exception of the compositions Call It What You Want–an ethereal modern jazz melody and harmony alternating between 5/8 and 6/8 time signatures— and Jazz is a Four-Letter Word – an up-tempo swinger with a syncopated undercurrent – this recording is another chapter in my study of Latin rhythms and their application to the Modern Jazz harmony I enjoy writing.
My Ship, the only arrangement on this session, is set to a Peruvian Lando and finishes in a 1960’s Coltrane Quartet-style modal vamp.
I wrote Mi Remedio (a Cha-Cha) for my most beautiful and excellent wife, Luzviminda Remedios Caparas. She is a nurse practitioner and has certainly been the ‘remedy’ for me!
Cancion Sabrosa (‘Tasty Song’) is a Mambo in Rhumba Clave, while Disjunction (another Mambo in Son Clave) was named for its jagged melody and unpredictable phrase lengths.
Neruda, inspired by the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, depicts both his somber, introspective poetry (1st half of the composition) and his more jubilant moods in the festive Mambo that follows.
Las Teclas Negras (The Black Keys) is an E-flat Minor Blues and is played as a medium tempo Mambo in 7/4.
Uncommon Ground was harmonically influenced by Wayne Shorter’s classic Ju Ju and rhythmically by the African Mapale.
Thank you again for continuing with me on this journey and look for a new installment next year!
